My history with Machiavelli begins with me as a young sophomore girl. I met him through The Prince, my first “philosophy” (though it is more political science… political philosophy, I guess).
Arguably, that title could go to Dostoyevsky’s The Grand Inquisitor, and it was The Grand Inquisitor that inspired me to explore the question of power. When I asked around to ask—which should I read next? My lovely AP US History teacher referred me to The Prince.
And ah, how this began my dabbling in philosophy! And how entranced was I at the logic and practicality of Machiavelli!
So here’s my haste rendering of my favorite quote of all time…
(In fact, it supported one of my worst years!)
